Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch February 14th, bringing significant changes to the franchise's iconic parkour system and introducing a unique dual protagonist structure.
The game's parkour mechanics have undergone a significant overhaul. Instead of free-climbing any surface, players will navigate designated "parkour highways," strategically designed routes for traversal. While this might seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable areas remain accessible, albeit requiring a more considered approach. This refined system offers improved flow and control, particularly evident in the seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish and fluid movements. The addition of a prone position further enhances mobility, enabling sprinting dives and slides. The design choice, according to Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois, allows for better control over character movement, differentiating the abilities of the two protagonists.
Speaking of protagonists, Shadows features Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and shadow maneuvering, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but lacking climbing abilities. This duality caters to both classic stealth fans and those who prefer the more action-oriented RPG combat introduced in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.
Ubisoft's blog post details the shift in parkour design, emphasizing the strategic placement of climbable pathways and the enhanced smoothness of ledge dismounts. The introduction of a grappling hook further expands traversal options.
Assassin's Creed Shadows will release on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th. The game faces stiff competition that month, with other major releases including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Whether Shadows can dominate the gaming landscape remains to be seen.
