Get ready for another round of fatalities! The sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot is officially on its way, and we've just gotten our first glimpse of a major addition to the cast: Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon unveiled a poster featuring Urban as the iconic Hollywood actor and Mortal Kombat fighter. The poster cleverly mimics a fictional Johnny Cage movie, complete with the over-the-top action you'd expect from the character.
Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story from the 2021 film, starring Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Joe Taslim. Joining them are several newcomers, including Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.
While plot details remain under wraps, the vast lore of the Mortal Kombat video game series provides ample material for the sequel. The original film focused on Cole Young's introduction to the Mortal Kombat tournament and the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
Initially planned for a theatrical release, the first Mortal Kombat film debuted on HBO Max due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Mortal Kombat 2 is set for a theatrical release on October 24, 2025.
Our review of the first film awarded it a 7/10, praising its "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles.”
