Call of Duty's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover is sparking outrage among players due to its hefty price tag. Unlocking all the themed items could cost upwards of $90 in COD Points, leading many to believe Activision should consider making Black Ops 6 free-to-play.

Activision revealed the Season 02 Reloaded content, including the TMNT crossover, launching February 20th. Each of the four turtles—Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael—gets their own premium bundle, likely priced at 2,400 COD Points ($19.99) each, totaling around $80 for the complete set.

Adding insult to injury, a premium event pass costing 1,100 COD Points ($10) is also available, offering exclusive cosmetics like Splinter. The free track offers more modest rewards, including two Foot Clan soldier skins.

While the crossover focuses primarily on cosmetic items with no impact on gameplay, the community is criticizing Activision's pricing model. Many argue that ignoring these expensive cosmetics is easy, but the sheer cost is still a point of contention. The introduction of a second premium event pass (following the Squid Game crossover) fuels comparisons to free-to-play models like Fortnite.

Reddit users voiced their frustration, highlighting the potential $90+ cost for all the TMNT content. Concerns are rising about the potential for seasonal premium event passes becoming the norm. The criticism extends to the lack of gameplay-affecting items within the paid content. One player even humorously pointed out the absurdity of the Turtles, who don't even use guns, having expensive cosmetic bundles.

Black Ops 6's monetization strategy is multifaceted, including a base battle pass (1,100 COD Points/$9.99), a premium BlackCell option ($29.99), and a constant stream of store cosmetics. The Turtles crossover, with its premium event pass, adds another layer to this already extensive system.

Players express concern about the cumulative cost of the game itself, the battle pass, and now these event passes. Many are calling for a free-to-play model for the multiplayer component, mirroring the structure of Warzone.

Activision's aggressive monetization isn't new, but the premium event pass has pushed some fans to their limit. The standardized monetization across the $70 Black Ops 6 and the free-to-play Warzone is a key point of contention. What's acceptable for a free game isn't necessarily acceptable for a full-priced title.

The calls for Black Ops 6 Multiplayer to go free-to-play are growing louder. With each microtransaction, the game feels increasingly similar to free-to-play titles like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Marvel Rivals.

Despite the backlash, Activision and Microsoft will likely maintain their current strategy, given Black Ops 6's record-breaking launch and strong sales. The game's financial success is undeniable, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.
