Analysts Predict High Switch 2 Sales at Launch, June Release Rumored

The price of the Nintendo Switch 2 is a major talking point in the video game industry. Analysts have shared with IGN their expectation that Nintendo's next-generation console will launch at around $400. This expectation is further supported by a recent Bloomberg report, which highlights predictions from Japan-focused analysts that align with this price range. While a $400 price tag marks a significant increase over the original Switch, there's speculation from another analyst to Bloomberg that Nintendo might aim even higher, possibly up to $499. However, the consensus among analysts is that the Switch 2 is poised for a monumental launch, potentially becoming the biggest console launch ever, regardless of its price.

"They will sell boatloads of Switch 2 in the first months in particular, almost regardless of the price," Tokyo analyst Serkan Toto told Bloomberg.

The anticipated popularity of the Switch 2 at launch is largely due to the demand for its impressive lineup of launch games. Serkan Toto predicts the release of a new Mario Kart, a new 3D Mario game, as well as Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4, all within the Switch 2's first year. Additionally, Toto expects robust third-party support, including a potential Call of Duty release from Activision.

A long list of rumored third-party titles is expected for the console. In an interview with IGN, Civilization 7 developer Firaxis expressed intrigue at the Switch 2's apparent Joy-Con mouse mode. French video game and accessories maker Nacon, known for titles like Greedfall 2, Test Drive Unlimited, and RoboCop: Rogue City, has confirmed readiness of Switch 2 games. The much-anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong is also rumored to be coming to the Switch 2. Last month, EA indicated that Madden, FC, and The Sims would be well-suited for the Switch 2.

It's important to note that Activision has not yet announced its plans for the Switch 2, and Nintendo has remained silent on the Bloomberg report.

As for the release date, June 2025 is increasingly mentioned in both online discussions and games media. Robin Zhu, a Japan-based analyst from Sanford C. Bernstein, told Bloomberg that the Switch 2 is expected to launch in June with an initial stock of 6-8 million units. If this stock sells out quickly, the Switch 2 could surpass the sales records of its predecessor and the PlayStation 4 and 5.

Concerns have been raised about the potential impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war on the Nintendo Switch 2's price. The Trump administration has imposed new tariffs on goods from China, Canada, and Mexico, which analysts warn could affect the price and availability of video games, consoles, and other tech products. However, Bloomberg points out that the Switch 2 will be assembled in both Vietnam and China, with one analyst suggesting that this diversified manufacturing approach could mitigate risks for Nintendo.

Despite the many unknowns about the Switch 2, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2, where more details about the console will be revealed.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. While most details, such as other games and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, were not disclosed, the Joy-Con mouse theory has gained significant attention.

Last month, a Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. This indicates that the Switch 2 will utilize gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which used rails for Joy-Con attachment, the new controllers will use magnets, allowing them to be attached on either side. While this change may not significantly impact the hardware, it will give players the flexibility to choose the positioning of certain buttons and the headphone port. If implemented, this flipping feature could lead to innovative gameplay mechanics.
