This LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is substantial, measuring 21 inches high and 16 inches wide—approximately 60% the size of the original painting. Its size makes it a statement piece, demanding to be displayed as art rather than simply a collectible. This reflects LEGO's ongoing transformation from a children's toy to a sophisticated adult hobby.

Vincent van Gogh's iconic Sunflowers series, painted during his prolific Arles period, holds deep personal significance for the artist. He viewed the sunflower as a symbol of gratitude, expressing this sentiment in a letter to a friend: "If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."
He created four versions in August 1888, revisiting the motif in January 1889 with additional repetitions. The most renowned are the fourth version and its two repetitions. The original resides at London's National Gallery, one repetition at Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art, and the most iconic (F458), known for its vibrant colors, is housed in Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum.
This LEGO set, a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum (established 1973) and LEGO, faithfully recreates the F458 repetition as a three-dimensional relief. Abstract LEGO pieces cleverly emulate van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.
The 34 numbered bags and instruction booklet (including a QR code linking to a van Gogh podcast) guide the build. The construction cleverly mirrors the real-world process: first, the frame, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas into the frame with pins.
A delightful Easter egg replicates a detail discovered by art experts: a wooden strip added to the top of the original canvas. LEGO cleverly mirrors this with a separate strip, attached with pins, using brown bricks to simulate wood. This subtle detail, invisible to the casual observer, adds a layer of satisfaction for the builder.
Building the sunflowers, while somewhat repetitive, is integral to achieving the painting's realism. The process itself mirrors van Gogh's dedication. Take your time and enjoy the build—it's not a race.
The depiction of wilting flowers and those shown in profile adds depth and complexity. Initially appearing abstract, these details create a cohesive whole when viewed from a distance.
The completed set's natural home is on a wall, a testament to its artistic merit. It’s a set that continues to reward repeated viewings, revealing new details over time. This is a truly exceptional LEGO set, highly recommended.
