The Elder Scrolls Online has finally introduced a feature that fans have been eagerly anticipating for over a decade—subclasses. Dive into the details of this exciting update and what's in store for the future of the game.
As The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) marks its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios unveiled a host of new features during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. One of the most anticipated additions is the introduction of subclasses, a feature long requested by the community.
For years, players have voiced their desire for the ability to swap classes without having to start over. The addition of new skill trees often meant starting from scratch, a tedious task in an MMO. Now, with subclasses, players can mix and match skill lines without the need to reroll their characters.
To access this feature, players must reach level 50. Upon reaching this milestone, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with any from the six available classes. This opens up over 3000 unique combinations, allowing players to tailor their gameplay to their preferred style.
ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in this new system, noting that extensive testing has been conducted. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, Lambert assured that the developers are "fine with where it is."
ZeniMax Online is shifting to a seasonal content model, which Studio Director Matt Firor believes will allow for more experimental releases and better address player feedback.
Firor stated, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."
The upcoming chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, is a sequel to the game's original Molag Bal storyline and has been in development for a decade. Players will explore the new Isle of Solstice zone and delve into the resurgence of the Worm Cult.
Producer Susan Kath mentioned that while the Seasons of the Worm Cult will span most of the year, future seasons will typically last between 3 to 6 months. ZeniMax plans to introduce "remix" seasons that revisit previous storylines, with a teased Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
On April 11, ESO announced via Twitter (X) a new 2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition, which will include all past and future releases. Here's what you can expect from each pass:
