Wizards of the Coast is set to enchant Magic: The Gathering fans with an exciting crossover with Final Fantasy this summer. Over the weekend, the team unveiled a substantial array of cards, both from the main set and the Commander decks, sparking joy and nostalgia among fans with beloved characters and iconic moments from their favorite Final Fantasy games.

The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy offers a comprehensive experience with both Commander decks and a booster-driven series. The main set spans the entire spectrum of Final Fantasy's mainline numbered games, from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks hone in on four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, featuring Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola as their respective Commanders.

During last Saturday's Magic: The Gathering panel at PAX East, attendees got a glimpse into the journey of individual characters through their games. For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil features a mechanic that reflects his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The summons from Final Fantasy are portrayed as "Saga Creatures," offering powerful but temporary forces on the field, seamlessly blending Magic and Final Fantasy concepts.

Iconic characters like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, are brought to life with artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura. The card's art showcases Sephiroth's evolution from a young fighter to his ultimate form as Safer Sephiroth on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

And what would a Final Fantasy set be without Cids? The set includes a Cid from each numbered Final Fantasy game, with Wizards choosing the classic Cid from Final Fantasy XV over his daughter, Cindy.

After the panel, Wizards of the Coast released the decklists for the four Commander decks, and fans have been eagerly analyzing the art and additions. The team has done an impressive job of translating these four Final Fantasy games into the Magic: The Gathering universe.

Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly incorporate Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp draws inspiration from the Jenova project in Final Fantasy 7.

Together, Forever taps into the emotional heartstrings of Final Fantasy 10 fans, reflecting the game's poignant narrative of a journey through a devastated world on a somber pilgrimage. Many cards in these decks reference pivotal character moments, so be aware of potential story spoilers when exploring the decklists.

To balance the gravity, lighter moments from Final Fantasy 10, like the iconic and often memed Inspiring Call, also made it into the set.

Wizards has cleverly woven in some of Final Fantasy's more humorous scenes into the cards. Clever Concealment, for example, references the Wall Market scene with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses, heading to Don Corneo's. The Secret Rendezvous card captures the Golden Saucer date scene from Final Fantasy 7, featuring different versions with Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

Fans have been delighted to spot the intricate details that pay homage to the source material. The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, is rich with references to the beloved MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card reflects his habit of disappearing and returning, creating a unique White/Black card. An observant fan pointed out that the Archaeomancer's Map card features a location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map in Final Fantasy 14.

Players of Final Fantasy 14 have been having fun with the cards, sharing jokes like the "This is Thancred" meme and adding humorous alternative flavor text to the Rite of Replication card, referencing a famous speech from A Realm Reborn.

Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

The Tome of Legends card even depicts a Wondrous Tails book, complete with all the details seen in-game, including missed four-in-a-row connections.

The attention to detail in these cards is truly remarkable, and it has me eager to explore the full set. While the Commander decks have received much attention, reveals like Commune With Beavers from Saturday's panel have me excited to see how other Final Fantasy games will be integrated into the complete Magic set.

Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy set is scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, with pre-release events starting one week earlier.
