Exciting news for fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: a live-action film adaptation is now in full production, thanks to a co-financing agreement between Bandai Namco and Legendary. Initially announced back in 2018, the project had been quiet until recent updates from Legendary and the newly established Bandai Namco Filmworks America sparked renewed enthusiasm among fans eager to see the first-ever live-action Gundam movie hit theaters.
The film, currently unnamed, will be helmed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth, serving as both writer and director. Set for a global theatrical release, this project marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which has previously spanned 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a highly successful toy line, generating over $900 million annually.
While specific details such as release dates and plot are still under wraps, Legendary and Bandai Namco have promised to share more information as it becomes available. A teaser poster has already been released, heightening anticipation.
"Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime' that could not be described in terms of simple good and evil, which had been the trend of robot anime up to that point, with realistic depictions of war, detailed scientific examinations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as 'weapons' called 'mobile suits,' and caused a huge boom," the companies stated, highlighting the franchise's groundbreaking impact on the anime world.
