Get ready for an exhilarating racing experience with *Mario Kart World*, a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive game set to launch alongside the highly anticipated console on June 5. This open-world racing game invites you to dive into the expansive Mushroom Kingdom, where you can explore freely with a variety of characters and vehicles. Preorders for the game are now available at several retailers, including Walmart.
Out June 5
Unlike many video games today, Mario Kart World is available in only one edition. You can purchase the game standalone for $79.99, or opt for the bundle that includes the Nintendo Switch 2 console for $499.99.
Opting for the Switch 2 bundle with Super Mario Kart World saves you $30 compared to purchasing the console and game separately. Keep in mind that this bundle comes with a digital copy of the game, meaning you won't receive a physical cartridge or game box. If you prefer a physical copy, you'll need to spend an additional $30.
When purchased on its own, Mario Kart World retails at $79.99, which is $10 more than the standard price for AAA games on PlayStation and Xbox this generation. While I'm not thrilled about rising game prices between console generations, I understand the increasing costs of game development. Hopefully, the scale and features of Mario Kart World justify the extra expense.
Mario Kart World is set to be the most ambitious Mario Kart game to date. It features an expansive open world reminiscent of the Forza Horizon series. In Grand Prix mode, you can seamlessly transition from the end of one track to the start of another after completing a race.
The game's tracks are dynamically altered by weather conditions and the time of day, which can impact visibility and traction. You can also venture off the main tracks and explore "virtually everywhere," according to Nintendo. Each race accommodates 24 drivers, a significant increase over previous Mario Kart titles.
A new mode called Knockout Tour challenges you to race across the open world, hitting checkpoints with specific placement requirements. Falling behind at any checkpoint results in elimination from the race.
For a more relaxed experience, Free Roam mode allows you to explore the world at your own pace, team up with friends, and capture memorable moments with in-game photography.
More details about Mario Kart World will be revealed during the Nintendo Direct on April 17. In the meantime, check out our hands-on preview for more insights.
