Player First Games has announced the impending closure of its platform fighter, MultiVersus, with Season 5 marking its final chapter. The game, launched May 28, 2024, will conclude its online services on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. This information was revealed via a blog post on the studio's website.

Season 5, commencing February 4, 2025, will be the game's swan song. While online play will cease, Player First Games assures players that all acquired content will remain accessible offline through local and training modes.

The MultiVersus team expressed gratitude for player support in a heartfelt message: “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Real-money transactions have been discontinued, effective immediately. However, Gleamium and character tokens can still be used to unlock in-game content until the May 30th shutdown. The game will also be delisted from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

MultiVersus' closure follows reports of its underperformance, leading to a significant $100 million writedown for Warner Bros. Discovery's games sector, as detailed in a November financial call. This contributed to a total $300 million writedown, alongside the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. This financial setback also coincided with the departure of Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad.

CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels stated during the November call: "We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline.”

Despite the game's imminent closure, Season 5 will introduce new content, including playable characters Lola Bunny (unlockable via daily calendar reward) and Aquaman (available through the battle pass), ensuring a final, action-packed send-off. Both characters will be released next week.
