Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen a significant surge in player count following the release of its final major update, Patch 8. Dive in to discover what Patch 8 brings to the table and what lies ahead for fans of this beloved RPG.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has concluded its epic journey with the release of Patch 8, the final major update for the game, on April 15, 2025. This milestone has sparked renewed interest among gamers, propelling the player count from around 60,000 to over 169,000 concurrent players on Steam, positioning it just outside the top 10 most played games.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, celebrated the surge in player numbers on Twitter (X) on April 22, attributing it to the robust mod support that allows the studio to shift focus to their next big project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new ventures.
In light of this, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate series without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.
Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly anticipated. It introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features. The detailed patch notes, available on BG3’s official website, showcase a comprehensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring the game's final state is polished and enjoyable.
Larian Studios has poured their heart into enhancing BG3, evident in the extensive updates and fixes included in this final patch. While this marks their last major update, Larian remains committed to supporting the modding community, ensuring the game continues to evolve.
