A first-party PlayStation game, code-named Gummy Bears, is said to draw significant inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. series, according to a recent report that also sheds light on other aspects of this mysterious project.
The first rumors about Gummy Bears surfaced online in August 2023 when The Game Post reported that Bungie was developing a MOBA with this codename. However, a year later, Bungie announced layoffs affecting 220 employees—a 17% reduction in its workforce. At the same time, the Destiny developer revealed plans to integrate 155 of its staff into Sony Interactive Entertainment.
These integration efforts have reportedly led Sony to establish a new PlayStation studio, according to The Game Post, which cited unnamed sources. This new subsidiary, comprising around 40 employees, has taken over the development of Gummy Bears. While the game's release is likely years away, its current development stage remains undisclosed. The Game Post also reports that Gummy Bears will adopt a unique health system inspired by Super Smash Bros.
Specifically, Gummy Bears is said to forgo traditional health bars, instead using a percentage-based system to determine how far a character is knocked back upon being hit. When the damage percentage reaches a certain level, characters can be knocked off the map, echoing the damage percent system used in Super Smash Bros.
Gummy Bears will reportedly feature three character classes typical of a MOBA: Attack, Defense, and Support. The game will also include multiple game modes and an aesthetic described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi." These elements differ significantly from Bungie's previous works, a deliberate choice aimed at differentiating Gummy Bears and appealing to a younger demographic.
Having been in development since at least 2022, the recent developer switch aligns with reports of PlayStation establishing a new studio in Los Angeles, which is believed to be working on Gummy Bears.
