Pokémon Go has revealed plans to introduce Paradox Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to the popular mobile game.
Paradox Pokémon are unique variants of well-known species from alternate past and future timelines, first seen in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on Nintendo Switch.
Artwork celebrating Pokémon Go's 9th anniversary features the ancient Great Tusk, evoking a prehistoric vibe, and the futuristic Iron Treads, with a sleek, cybernetic look. Both are reimagined versions of the classic Pokémon Donphan, prompting fans to speculate on their debut method.
In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Paradox Pokémon roam freely in the wild, but in Pokémon Go, players anticipate these formidable creatures will appear in raids, much like the Ultra Beasts from Pokémon Sun and Moon.
The discovery of Paradox Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet's "Area Zero" crater has led some fans to propose they’d suit this year’s Pokémon Go Wild Area event, designed to mimic a safari-like experience.
There are 22 Paradox Pokémon species, blending common and Legendary Pokémon with unique twists. For instance, Jigglypuff transforms into the ancient Scream Tail, while Legendary Terrakion becomes the robotic Iron Boulder. Most Legendary Paradox variants are expected to debut in raids.

A word of caution: Pokémon Go’s anniversary artwork doesn’t always guarantee follow-through. Fans recall past teases, like Mega Mewtwo and the beloved Ghost-type Mimikyu, that never materialized. However, the game’s developer seems more attuned to fan expectations, making Paradox Pokémon a fitting addition after the recent rollout of Gigantamax creatures, Ultra Beasts, and nearly all Mega Pokémon.
The anniversary artwork also hints at Gigantamax Butterfree, expected to launch soon, and Mega Metagross, one of the few remaining Mega species yet to appear. A player avatar receiving a virtual thumbs-up has sparked speculation about new features like remote communication or trading.
Zygarde, featured in the upcoming Pokémon Legends Z-A for Switch and Switch 2, is already in Pokémon Go, but players can only own one. Could more become available, possibly via Mega Raids, if Zygarde gains a Mega form in Z-A? Only time will reveal the answer, much like the time-bending Paradox Pokémon themselves.
Last week, Pokémon Go’s developer addressed an issue with Golden PokéStops impacting the 9th anniversary celebrations. Last month, IGN spoke with Pokémon Go director Michael Steranka about the game’s future, including the new $20 Golden Bottle Cap item for boosting stats and how Scopely’s Saudi-backed ownership won’t affect the game—or lead to additions like Cristiano Ronaldo.
