The Nintendo GameCube, despite being nearly 25 years old, boasts a dedicated fanbase eager to acquire its rarest iterations. Among the most sought-after are the DVD-playing Panasonic Q and numerous themed variants, such as the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red console. However, the pinnacle of rarity may be the "Space World" GameCube, a prototype unveiled at Nintendo Space World 2000. Remarkably, one of these LED-equipped prototypes resurfaced in 2023 at ConsoleVariations, discovered by Donny Fillerup.
Several key distinctions set the Space World GameCube apart from the retail version. Most significantly, it lacks internal hardware beyond a few LEDs to simulate operation. Physically, the top logo is semi-transparent at the bottom, revealing any inserted disc, and the vents also differ. According to ConsoleVariations, over 20 variations exist between this prototype and the original Japanese GameCube.
Intriguingly, the listing excludes the console's controller, which also differs significantly from the standard GameCube controller.
This isn't Fillerup's first venture into selling rare consoles. In 2022, he auctioned a Golden Wii, once a gift from THQ to the British Royal Family, for $36,000.
Therefore, a $100,000 price tag for a historically significant prototype like the Space World GameCube isn't entirely unreasonable. While the asking price is substantial, prospective buyers with deep pockets could potentially acquire this piece of gaming history. Fillerup is also open to offers, suggesting a lower sale price remains a possibility.
