Marvel found itself compelled to reveal Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World trailers, the film's director maintains — despite fan sentiment that the villain's appearance should have remained secret.

Red Hulk, the gamma-powered alternate form of Harrison Ford's President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, makes a late third-act appearance after prolonged buildup suggesting Ross might control his transformation.

Among various criticisms of Brave New World (considered one of the MCU's more forgettable entries), fans argue that showcasing Red Hulk in promotional materials not only spoiled the surprise but misrepresented his actual screen time.

Director Julius Onah claims Marvel had no alternative, as leaks would have inevitably exposed Red Hulk anyway.

"When Harrison Ford's casting as Thaddeus Ross was announced to our massive, passionate fanbase, the secret was essentially blown," Onah told Empire. "Ideally it would've been an incredible theater surprise, but between potential toy leaks or trailer spoilers, maintaining secrecy in today's climate proves extremely challenging."

While Marvel indeed faces persistent leak issues (with merchandise historically ruining surprises), this justification contrasts with how the studio has previously handled villain reveals.
