Scopely has recently announced a groundbreaking acquisition of Niantic, bringing some of the most iconic names in augmented reality gaming under its umbrella. This business deal, valued at a staggering $3.5 billion, includes fan favorites like Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. This move is set to reshape the landscape of mobile gaming.
Pokémon GO, which has been a sensation since its launch in 2016, continues to thrive. In 2024 alone, it boasted over 100 million unique players, maintaining its position in the top 10 mobile games annually. The enduring appeal of Pokémon GO is a testament to its innovative use of AR technology and community engagement.
Pikmin Bloom, launched in 2021 in collaboration with Nintendo, has also seen significant growth. The game encourages players to plant virtual flowers as they walk, promoting physical activity. In 2024, players collectively logged an impressive 3.94 trillion steps. The game's popularity surged further with in-person events in Japan, the U.S., and Germany, drawing thousands of enthusiastic fans.
Monster Hunter Now, Niantic's latest offering since its launch in September 2023, has quickly gained traction with over 15 million downloads. Alongside the games, Niantic's development teams and companion apps such as Campfire and Wayfarer are transitioning to Scopely. Campfire facilitates real-world gameplay connections, while Wayfarer enables the mapping of new locations for Niantic games. In 2024, over six million players participated in in-person events through Campfire, and Wayfarer has added more than 11.5 million new location points since its inception in 2019.
For players, the transition to Scopely is expected to be seamless. Scopely's portfolio already includes successful titles like MONOPOLY GO!, Stumble Guys, Star Trek Fleet Command, and MARVEL Strike Force, suggesting that Niantic's games will continue to flourish. Scopely has committed to enhancing the development teams' resources and introducing new AR experiences to Niantic's games. These promised enhancements are eagerly anticipated by the gaming community.
