Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link!

Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, a mobile game that had been in development since 2019. The news, while perhaps not unexpected given Square Enix's history of game cancellations, still came as a shock to many fans. The project had undergone several closed beta tests on both Android and iOS, and the team had shared updates as recently as November 2024, indicating a delay. Participants in the closed beta tests were particularly surprised, as the game seemed to be progressing well.

Why Was Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Cancelled?

The development team cited an inability to envision a sustainable path forward for the game that would meet player expectations over the long term. Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link was designed to be a live-service experience, but the team struggled to execute this vision effectively. The game promised a unique, GPS-based adventure where players could explore the world and fight Heartless with their keyblades, set within a forgotten chapter of the Kingdom Hearts saga. Despite the intrigue surrounding the GPS feature, the concept did not pan out as hoped. Square Enix decided to cancel the project rather than release an underwhelming product, choosing instead to redirect their focus.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming!

Despite the cancellation of Missing-Link, fans can take solace in the fact that Kingdom Hearts IV remains in development. Announced at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event in 2022, Square Enix recently provided a small update confirming that the project is still moving forward. While the loss of Missing-Link may be disappointing, the main series continues to thrive, offering hope for future adventures in the Kingdom Hearts universe.
