Rainn Wilson, star of The Office, has acknowledged the difficulty of continuing the hit comedy series without lead actor Steve Carell, who departed two seasons before the show's eventual finale.
Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, told Variety that Carell's exit was not a surprise to the cast, as the actor playing their boss was already in high demand for film roles. "We knew it was coming for a long time," Wilson stated.
Nevertheless, the series needed time to find its footing again after the departure of Carell's character, Michael Scott—a period Wilson described as somewhat chaotic behind the scenes.
"When Steve left, things became a bit chaotic," Wilson said. "We were trying to figure out the show's tone, who the lead was, and how to tell stories without the main comic engine of the series—Michael Scott—and without one of America's greatest comedic actors at the center. That was a real challenge."
Carell was already an established movie star before The Office, having filmed roles in Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin prior to becoming Dunder Mifflin's infamous regional manager.
The Office, however, propelled Carell's career to new heights, just as it did for Wilson and his co-star John Krasinski.

With Carell gone, the show's final seasons introduced new characters played by James Spader and Catherine Tate in senior positions. The series concluded by wrapping up the original characters' stories, culminating in Dwight's wedding to his long-term love interest, Angela—an event featuring a brief, long-awaited cameo from Carell.
Next up for fans is a new spin-off titled The Paper, set to debut this September. Co-created by producer Greg Daniels and starring Domhnall Gleeson, the series will use the same mockumentary style, this time set in a struggling local newspaper office, with The Office's character Oscar appearing in a recurring role.
Carell has already confirmed he will not be involved in The Paper, noting there would be "really no reason" for Michael Scott to appear.
