The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved game. With GTA Online's continued success and profitability, the question of whether it will be replaced or continue alongside a potential GTA Online 2 is paramount. Concerns exist that years of investment in the current GTA Online could be rendered obsolete.

This uncertainty prompted IGN to question Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. While he avoided specifics regarding unannounced projects, he offered insight by referencing the company's handling of NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online and its sequel, NBA 2K Online 2, coexisted successfully, with both games remaining active and supported.

Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. We launched NBA 2K Online...and then we launched NBA 2K Online 2...We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market." This suggests a willingness to maintain legacy titles with active player bases.

This implies that a potential GTA Online 2 wouldn't necessarily replace the original. Continued player engagement in the current GTA Online could lead to its continued support alongside any new iteration.

However, significant details about GTA 6 remain undisclosed. With a Fall 2025 release window, Rockstar Games needs to provide more information soon. The possibility of both GTA Online and a sequel coexisting hinges on the continued popularity of the original. The future of GTA Online remains uncertain, but Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for players invested in the current game.
