Splash Damage has officially canceled its Transformers: Reactivate project after a prolonged and challenging development. Initially unveiled at The Game Awards 2022, the 1-4 player online game promised a unique collaboration between Autobots and Decepticons against a new alien threat. Despite early excitement and leaked details hinting at a Generation 1 roster (Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, Soundwave, potentially Optimus Prime and Bumblebee) and even Beast Wars characters, the project ultimately failed to materialize.
The studio's announcement on Twitter expressed the difficult nature of the decision, acknowledging potential job losses due to restructuring and refocusing efforts. Splash Damage thanked both its development team and Hasbro for their contributions. Fan reactions are mixed, with some expressing disappointment while others anticipated the cancellation given the lack of updates since the 2022 trailer.
The studio's shift in focus is now entirely on "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game utilizing Unreal Engine 5, announced in March 2023 and developed in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel. This pivot, however, unfortunately comes at the cost of layoffs within the former Transformers: Reactivate team. The cancellation leaves Transformers fans without a new AAA title featuring the iconic Robots in Disguise.
