Home > News > 'It Does Real Harm to Artists of All Kinds' — Balatro Dev Localthunk Steps In to Resolve AI Art Reddit Fiasco
Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit regarding AI-generated art. A former moderator, DrTankHead, who also moderated a NSFW Balatro subreddit, had previously stated that AI art would be permitted, provided it was properly labeled. This statement, however, contradicted Localthunk and publisher Playstack's stance.
Localthunk subsequently issued a statement on Bluesky and the main subreddit clarifying that neither they nor Playstack condoned the use of AI-generated imagery. DrTankHead was removed from the main subreddit's moderation team, and a policy prohibiting AI-generated images was implemented. Playstack's communications director acknowledged the previous subreddit rules were unclear, leading to the misinterpretation. The remaining moderators are working to clarify the rules.
DrTankHead, in the NSFW Balatro subreddit, confirmed their removal and stated that while they didn't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they were considering allowing non-NSFW AI-generated art on specific days. A user responded by suggesting a temporary break from Reddit.
The debate highlights the ongoing tension surrounding generative AI in the video game industry. Recent instances, such as Keywords Studios' unsuccessful attempt to create an AI-driven game and conflicting statements from major publishers like EA and Capcom regarding their AI usage, underscore the complex ethical and practical challenges presented by this technology. Activision's admission of using AI for some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 assets, despite a negative player reaction, further exemplifies this complexity.
