This app, a project titled "Digital Revolution of Devarattam," is dedicated to the esteemed Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimamani Mr. K. Nelliai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, recipients of the Kalaimamani, Kalaimamani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards respectively, for their contributions to Devarattam. I also dedicate this app to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the cherished legends of Devarattam.
The primary aim of the Devarattam app is to promote Devarattam and its distinguished awardees. The app provides detailed information about Devarattam and its practitioners.
Devarattam is a vibrant folk dance of Tamil Nadu, traditionally performed—and continuing to be performed—by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community. The dance boasts a repertoire of 32 to 72 steps, with 32 forming the foundational sequence, while the remaining steps offer variations and extensions of the core movements.
Devarattam dancers gracefully perform, each holding a kerchief in each hand and adorned with salangai (ankle bells) on their legs, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument.
