Russian Checkers 8×8

In Russian checkers, the game begins with white moving first on a dark square-only board. Players must capture an opponent's piece if possible, with captures allowed both forward and backward. Kings have the freedom to move and capture along any diagonal. The Turkish strike rule applies, allowing only one capture per piece per turn. If multiple capture options exist, players can choose any, not necessarily the longest sequence. Upon reaching the opponent's edge, a checker is crowned a king and can immediately utilize its new abilities if a move is available.

A draw can be declared under various conditions, such as when a player with checkers and three or more kings fails to capture an opponent's lone king within 15 moves, or when the game reaches a stalemate after a specified number of moves without changes in the position or captures.

International Checkers 10×10

International checkers also start with white on a dark square-only board. Mandatory captures are enforced, with the ability to capture in any direction. The king's movement mirrors that of the Russian version. The Turkish strike rule is in effect, but the majority rule dictates that when multiple captures are possible, the player must choose the sequence that captures the most pieces. A simple checker that reaches the opponent's edge during a capture sequence continues as a regular checker, only becoming a king if it stops on the edge. Once a checker becomes a king, it waits until its next turn to move as a king.
