The Hang is a captivating musical instrument belonging to the idiophone class, crafted in Switzerland. Known also as the handpan, this instrument boasts a unique construction, featuring two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet meticulously glued together at the rim. This design creates a hollow interior and results in a distinctive 'UFO shape' that is both visually and acoustically intriguing.
The upper surface, referred to as the "Ding," is adorned with a central 'note' and surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields,' all meticulously hammered into the steel. The bottom, known as the "Gu," is a smooth surface with a rolled hole at its center. When the rim is struck, it produces a tuned note, adding another layer of sound to the instrument's repertoire.
The Hang operates on similar physical principles to the steelpan but is uniquely modified to function as a Helmholtz resonator. This innovation stems from extensive research on the steelpan and other instruments, showcasing the dedication to creating a new and harmonious sound experience.
