Ubisoft has celebrated yet another milestone for Assassin's Creed Shadows, noting that the game has attracted 2 million players since its launch on March 20. This impressive figure is a significant increase from the 1 million players recorded on its debut day. Ubisoft proudly stated that this surpasses the launch performance of both Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey, emphasizing the game's strong start by thanking fans for joining the journey through feudal Japan.
Despite the excitement surrounding the player count, Ubisoft has not yet disclosed specific sales figures for Assassin's Creed Shadows. However, the game has topped the sales charts on Steam, marking a successful return for Ubisoft to the platform after years of exclusivity on the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, Assassin's Creed Shadows boasted 58,894 concurrent players on Steam, securing its place in the top 30 most-played games on Valve's platform. This peak is anticipated to rise further as the game's opening weekend progresses.
For context, Assassin's Creed Origins reached a peak of 41,551 players on Steam, while Odyssey hit 62,069. Given these figures, it seems probable that Shadows will soon claim the title of the most-played Assassin's Creed game on Steam. Notably, BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which launched on October 31, 2024, achieved a peak of 89,418 players on the same platform.
It's important to note that the true concurrent peak for Assassin's Creed Shadows will be significantly higher, considering its availability on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S as well. Unfortunately, player numbers for these consoles are not publicly disclosed by Sony or Microsoft.

Assassin's Creed Shadows faces immense global pressure to succeed for Ubisoft, especially following multiple delays and the disappointing sales of last year's Star Wars Outlaws. The company has endured several high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to Shadows' release. The situation has become so dire that Ubisoft's founding Guillemot family and its largest shareholder are reportedly in discussions with Tencent and other investors about a potential buyout that would allow them to retain control.
The game itself has not been without controversy, particularly in Japan. This week, IGN reported that Ubisoft released a day-one patch for Assassin's Creed Shadows, making significant changes in response to concerns from Japanese politicians regarding in-game temples and shrines. In a notable exchange, Japanese politician Hiroyuki Kada brought up the issue in a government meeting, prompting a response from Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
On Steam, Assassin's Creed Shadows is receiving positive feedback from players, achieving a 'very positive' user review rating with 81% of over 6,000 reviews being favorable. IGN's review awarded the game an 8/10, praising it for refining its existing systems to create one of the best open-world experiences in the series.
