High Demand for Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions Leads to Production Increase
The Pokémon Company is responding to significant shortages of its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, as reported by IGN on January 16, 2025. The company acknowledges the difficulty some fans are experiencing in acquiring the product due to unexpectedly high demand. A spokesperson stated that they are working at maximum capacity to increase production and address the issue swiftly.
Unforeseen Demand Impacts US Retailers
The shortage, initially reported by the Pokémon TCG fan website PokeBeach on January 4, 2025, is particularly impacting smaller US retailers. According to Deguire, owner of Player 1 Services in Maryland, the surge in demand from stores not typically carrying Pokémon products has led to distributors limiting supplies by 10-15% for local retailers. This resulted in larger chains like GameStop and Target receiving a disproportionate share of the stock.
The scarcity is also driving up prices on the secondary market. The upcoming Elite Trainer Box, for example, is already being sold for $127 USD, significantly above its $55 retail price. However, this price inflation is expected to decrease once the Pokémon Company increases its supply.
