In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, mastering the art of defeating or capturing the Chatacabra, a formidable yet manageable early-game adversary, can significantly enhance your gameplay. This long-tongued, frog-like monster is known for its close-range tongue attacks, making it a unique challenge right from the start.
Understanding the Chatacabra's weaknesses and attack patterns is crucial. It's vulnerable to Ice and Thunder, making these elements your go-to for a quick takedown. While it has no specific resistances, it's immune to Sonic Bombs, so don't rely on those.
The Chatacabra primarily uses its tongue for close-range attacks, but it can also charge at you if you're too distant. Its smaller size can make weapons like the Bow and Charge Blade less effective due to their multi-hit nature being more suited for larger targets. However, any weapon can work well against it, given its status as one of the easier monsters to face.
Most of its attacks are directed in front, where it uses its tongue and front limbs for slamming attacks. The slam is always preceded by it rearing up, giving you a chance to dodge or block. The only significant attack from the back is a sweeping tongue move, which it signals by raising its head skyward.
To efficiently defeat the Chatacabra, position yourself near its sides. This allows you to avoid the majority of its frontal assaults while capitalizing on its elemental weaknesses. With the right strategy, you'll soon be sporting a new frog skin hat.
Capturing the Chatacabra follows the standard procedure for any monster in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. Since it can't fly, it's relatively straightforward. Equip yourself with either a Shock Trap or a Pitfall Trap and at least two Tranq Bombs, though carrying one of each trap and up to eight Tranq Bombs is advisable to account for any mishaps.
Engage the Chatacabra until its health is low enough for its icon on the mini-map to show a skull, indicating it's limping to a new area for the last time. Follow it to this location, set up your trap, and lure it in. Once trapped, use two Tranq Bombs to sedate it, completing the capture process.
