Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 could hit the market by the end of 2025. Additionally, there's buzz about a next-gen upgrade for the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, insiders "close to Rockstar" have hinted that both the Switch 2 version and a "next-gen upgrade patch" for current-gen systems are in the works. While specifics are sparse, these sources suggest that both could launch as early as this year.
Echoing this sentiment, Nintenduo reports that the Switch 2 edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to release within Take-Two's current financial year, ending March 31, 2026. It's uncertain whether this port will be available digitally only or as a physical edition.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, we at IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10. IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review praised it as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."
The prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch 2 isn't entirely surprising. In a recent Q&A with investors, Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He noted that Nintendo's support for third-party publishers has improved compared to previous generations. "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform," Zelnick stated. He added that historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been challenging, but Nintendo is addressing this, and Take-Two is stepping up due to their optimism for the platform. Zelnick emphasized that while they evaluate bringing titles to platforms on a case-by-case basis, they're keen on being where consumers are, and they see great opportunities in their catalog for the Switch 2.

Specifically, Take-Two plans to launch Civilization 7 on June 5, the day the Switch 2 launches, followed by the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (with specific titles and dates yet to be announced), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. These titles are not surprising choices, as Take-Two already publishes these franchises on the current Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door could be open for other releases from Take-Two's extensive back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, there's potential for games like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to find their way to the Switch 2.
