The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a modern makeover with the upcoming release of Breakout Beyond, nearly 50 years after its original debut. This new iteration, developed by Choice Provisions—the studio behind the BIT.TRIP series—puts a fresh spin on Atari's classic brick-breaker. While maintaining the traditional paddle-and-ball mechanics, Breakout Beyond introduces a unique twist by having the game progress sideways, moving players from left to right as they break through bricks.
The core objective remains the same: break bricks and rack up combos. As players build their streaks, the game's visuals and effects become increasingly spectacular. Special bricks add an extra layer of excitement by triggering dazzling effects, from massive explosions to deploying an actual laser cannon. Breakout Beyond will feature 72 carefully crafted levels, alongside an unlockable endless mode that includes an online global leaderboard, allowing players to compete for the highest scores. For those who prefer company, the game offers a local two-player co-op mode.
Originally slated to be an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond took a different path when Atari stepped in to acquire and complete its development. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."
The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 launch, has yet to hit the market due to numerous delays and setbacks. Although Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision last year, the Amico itself was not part of the deal.
Breakout Beyond is scheduled to launch later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS. This broad release ensures that fans of the classic game and newcomers alike can enjoy this innovative take on a timeless favorite.
