Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making waves with its upcoming VR release, exclusively launching on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's debut in virtual and mixed reality gaming.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity

2K Games and Firaxis Games unveiled this exciting news during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for the launch, stating, "We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!" Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the momentum in mixed reality and emphasizing Civ VII VR as a "genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans." Note that while Civ VII is releasing on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

The VR experience places players at a Command Table, offering unique perspectives on the game world. Players can zoom out for strategic overviews or zoom in for detailed views of units and buildings, resembling a dynamic tabletop game. The game seamlessly transitions between immersive VR and mixed reality modes, adapting to the player's environment. In VR, players are immersed in a museum setting; in mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with their physical space.

Civ VII VR supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. The online multiplayer feature requires both a 2K and a Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback gathered during Civ VII's early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements, focusing on intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish. Planned updates include community-requested features such as multiplayer teams and a broader range of map types. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, addressing UI issues, AI balance, diplomacy, crises, and bug fixes.

Civilization VII VR is anticipated this Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise release date yet to be announced.
