It seems that the DCU movie The Authority is facing significant challenges, as confirmed by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Announced as part of the ambitious Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters reboot two years ago, The Authority was intended to be a major film centered around the brutal superhero team from the WildStorm Universe. However, Gunn recently revealed that the project has been placed on the "back burner."
During a DC Studios presentation, Gunn highlighted The Authority as the "hardest" project among the slate announced for Chapter 1. He cited the success of Amazon's The Boys and the influence The Authority had on subsequent works as major hurdles. Gunn also mentioned the challenge of integrating characters already filmed and loved by audiences into the broader narrative.
Despite these setbacks, The Authority isn't the only project facing difficulties. Gunn noted that Waller, a spinoff from his HBO Max series Peacemaker, has also encountered "a couple of setbacks." On a more positive note, HBO Max series Booster Gold is progressing well, and Paradise Lost remains a priority with active development underway. The pilot for Paradise Lost is currently being written.
As for Swamp Thing, DC Studios is prepared to wait for acclaimed director James Mangold, who is currently working on another project titled A Complete Unknown. Safran expressed their willingness to wait for Mangold to return to Swamp Thing, a project that stands somewhat apart from the larger DCU narrative.
In related news, one character from The Authority, The Engineer / Angela Spica, is set to appear in the DCU's Superman. Known for her exceptional powers and intellect, The Engineer adds an exciting element to the upcoming film. For more details on The Authority and its characters, check out IGN's comprehensive guide.
