Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with updates to be revealed gradually, according to series creator Yuji Horii. During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on the project.
This is the first substantial update since May 2024, following announcements regarding the passing of Akira Toriyama (character designer) and Koichi Sugiyama (composer). The departure of lead producer Yu Miyake to head Square Enix's mobile gaming division was also previously noted.
Recent Square Enix restructuring and a lack of updates fueled fan concerns about a potential cancellation of Dragon Quest XII. However, Horii's statement allays these fears, confirming the game's continued development.
Dragon Quest XII was announced as part of the franchise's 35th-anniversary celebration. It will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has since reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake surpassed sales projections, achieving 2 million units sold.
