In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you primarily play as the Wanderer, striving for peace. Your choices shape the main storyline, and you'll frequently have companions fighting alongside you.
These companions remain at your side throughout battles, offering significant support. While you generally control the Wanderer, there are opportunities to command your companions, often proving more effective than using the Wanderer's upgrades. Here's how to switch characters:
Character switching is only possible during battles where a companion is present. Before a battle, your companion is listed as the final option in the pre-battle menu. You can choose to fight solo, but companion switching isn't available here. Once the battle starts, your companion's health bar appears below yours in the bottom right corner.
Beneath their health bar is a blue meter, similar to your Musou gauge. This meter fills as you perform actions like:
Most combat actions contribute to filling this meter, although at varying speeds.
A "Change Character" button appears next to the filled companion meter. Press and hold this button (View button on Xbox, C on PC, or Touchpad on PlayStation) for roughly a second to switch control.
Switching characters mid-battle is strategically advantageous, as companions are exceptionally powerful. Control of a companion is temporary, lasting approximately one minute. The blue meter, which enabled the switch, gradually depletes, showing your remaining control time. Your new character starts with full Bravery and a set of highly effective combat arts.
The character switch initiates with a powerful attack. Aim carefully at an enemy when switching. Your companion also possesses a full Musou gauge and health bar, allowing immediate use of their special attack.
