Final Fantasy 14 players in North America experienced a significant server disruption on January 5th, affecting all four data centers. Initial reports and player accounts suggest the outage, which lasted approximately an hour, stemmed from a local power failure in Sacramento, possibly caused by a blown transformer. This contrasts with the persistent DDoS attacks that plagued the game throughout 2024.
The outage, starting around 8:00 PM Eastern, caused widespread disconnections. Reddit users corroborated reports of a loud explosion heard in Sacramento, coinciding with the outage's start time, strongly suggesting a power-related incident. Square Enix acknowledged the issue via the Lodestone, confirming the ongoing investigation.
Unlike the previously experienced DDoS attacks, which caused high latency and disconnections due to server overload, this incident appears to be a localized issue. The Europe, Japan, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected, further supporting this conclusion. Servers gradually returned to service, beginning with Aether, Crystal, and Primal, while Dynamis remained offline at the time of this writing.
This latest setback adds to the challenges faced by Final Fantasy 14, especially considering the ambitious plans for 2025, including the anticipated launch of a mobile version. The long-term impact of these recurring server problems remains to be seen.
