The free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch, and weeks after its release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This closure also marks the end for its developer, Mountaintop Studios.

Mountaintop CEO, Nate Mitchell, confirmed the news via a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch fell short of the success needed to sustain the game and the studio. While initially optimistic, with around 400,000 players and a peak concurrent count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms in the first week, player numbers and revenue ultimately proved insufficient to cover operational costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the necessary funding. Mitchell acknowledged the current challenging climate within the gaming industry.

Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days. Players will receive refunds for any in-game purchases made since the Season 1 launch.

This announcement contradicts October 2024 reports stating Spectre Divide was secure and would continue receiving updates. Mitchell's previous statement assured players that Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support the game long-term.

PlayIGN's August 2024 preview praised *Spectre Divide*'s tactical 3v3 gameplay and unique Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously. However, its swift closure follows a string of other unsuccessful live-service titles, including *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and *Concord*.
