Six years after Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania hit Hollow Knight, fans are buzzing with speculation. The game's absence from various showcases, including The Game Awards, has fueled intense anticipation. Now, a seemingly innocuous cake picture has ignited a frenzy of theories.
On January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake image, accompanied by the cryptic tweet: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow." With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, fans immediately connected the dots.
The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement indeed followed on January 16th. However, the real intrigue began when fans reverse-image searched the cake, tracing it back to a Bon Appétit recipe published on April 2nd, 2024. The significance? Nintendo subsequently announced a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. This led many to believe Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) to tease Silksong's release.
The mystery deepens. Fans are dissecting Pellen's new Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr (15 characters, the Twitter handle limit, possibly hinting at a Silksong NPC), and his new name, "little bomey," potentially referencing a South Australian wine, aligning with Team Cherry's location.
Initially, Silksong was slated for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. However, six years later, the possibility of it being a Switch 2 launch title, or a timed exclusive, has fans in a state of excited speculation. Is this a carefully orchestrated ARG, or simply overzealous fan interpretation?
Only time will tell. We have several months until April 2nd, 2025, to unravel the mystery. Until then, the Hollow Knight community continues its investigation.
