Drawing inspiration from the historic paddle boats that once navigated the Mississippi River during the 1800s, the LEGO River Steamboat reflects the era when these vessels transitioned from industrial transport to leisure and entertainment hubs. My wife and I experienced this firsthand on our honeymoon in New Orleans, where we enjoyed a riverboat cruise complete with dining, dancing, and live jazz music.

This set is a dream for LEGO enthusiasts. It includes a detailed jazz lounge and dining room, as well as practical areas such as the boiler engine room, which connects directly to the paddle wheel. Pushing the boat activates the wheel, and the pilothouse's steering wheel controls the rudder. The set also features a kitchen, sleeping quarters for the crew, and an anchor on a chain that can be raised and lowered.

The build process is divided into 32 bags, starting with the ship's base, which houses the boiler room and a miniature nautical museum showcasing various steam engines. The minimalistic design and clever repurposing of elements are hallmarks of LEGO's ingenuity; for instance, a hot dog bun from another set becomes an engine reinforcement here.

Moving up, the main deck hosts the dining room and jazz lounge, complete with tiny LEGO instruments and elegant furnishings. The dining room can be built separately and dropped into place, creating additional deck space for minifigures to enjoy the view, although the set does not include any minifigures.

The crew deck features sleeping and bathroom facilities, while the pilothouse boasts a steering wheel connected to the rudder via a rod that runs through all four levels of the ship—a testament to the intricate engineering involved.

Numerous small details enhance the set's appeal, from repurposed croissant accessories as billowy flags to the neat rows of railings and patterned tiles that mimic rugs. Despite its large size, the set feels compact and efficient, making every piece count.
