Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods

Marvel Rivals' Season 1 update, released January 10, 2025, has reportedly disabled custom-made mods. This change, while unannounced, prevents players from using modified character skins, a popular pastime since the game's December launch.

Season 1 introduced significant content, including playable Fantastic Four characters (Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman initially, with the Thing and Human Torch to follow), a new Battle Pass, maps, and a Doom Match mode. However, the simultaneous elimination of mod functionality has sparked discussion among players.

NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, even for purely cosmetic modifications. While previous actions involved individual mod bans (such as a Donald Trump Captain America skin), the Season 1 update appears to have implemented hash checking, effectively preventing most mods from functioning.

This widespread mod ban, while not entirely surprising given NetEase's prior statements, has disappointed some players who enjoyed customizable content. Several mod creators have expressed frustration, sharing unreleased creations now rendered obsolete.

While some controversial mods featuring inappropriate content existed, the primary driver behind the ban is likely financial. As a free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals relies heavily on in-app purchases of character bundles containing cosmetic items. The availability of free, custom-made skins would directly undermine the game's monetization strategy and its profitability. Therefore, the mod ban serves as a necessary, albeit unpopular, business decision for NetEase.
