It feels like only last week that the Clash of Clans board game Kickstarter broke records, funding in just hours. Now, another popular mobile title is headed to your table—March of Empires has launched its own Kickstarter for a tabletop adaptation.
March of Empires: Time of War is designed as a brisk strategy game that captures both kingdom-building and military conflict from the original. With sessions lasting around 30 minutes and support for 2–4 players, it may not rival epic board games, but its accessibility is a major plus.
What’s more, it integrates one of mobile strategy’s most debated mechanics: timers. Often a nuisance in digital games, here the Hourglass system becomes central—guiding construction and unit recruitment rather than simply slowing you down.

Bringing March of Empires to tabletops could prove more advantageous than Clash of Clans. While Clash’s familiarity might deter some, March of Empires could easily be seen as a fresh IP on store shelves—free from preconceptions.
That isn’t to suggest Clash of Clans would push fans away. But licensed board games often risk alienating newcomers who assume prior knowledge is required.
