Seven years after its initial release, Destiny's iconic Tower social space has received an unexpected and unexplained update, featuring festive lighting and decorations. This surprise, discovered by players on January 5th, has sparked considerable speculation within the community.

The original Destiny, while still accessible, largely faded into the background following the launch of Destiny 2 in 2017. While Bungie continues to integrate legacy content from Destiny 1 into its sequel—including raids and exotic weapons—this unannounced Tower update is a unique occurrence.

Players logged in to find Ghost-shaped lights adorning the Tower, reminiscent of past seasonal events like The Dawning. However, unlike previous events, the familiar snowy atmosphere is absent, and the banners are different. No new quests or in-game messages accompanied the update, adding to the mystery.

A Forgotten Event?

The leading theory among players points towards a cancelled event known as "Days of the Dawning," originally slated for 2016. Reddit user Breshi and others have compared unused assets from this scrapped event to the current Tower decorations, suggesting a possible connection. The hypothesis is that the decorations were assigned a future date in the game's code, with the intention of later removal, an assumption likely made based on the expectation that Destiny 1 would no longer be actively maintained.

Bungie has yet to comment on the unexpected update. Given that 2017 marked the franchise's transition to Destiny 2, leaving Destiny 1 largely untouched, this unscheduled addition is a peculiar anomaly.
