Following its 2022 shutdown, the classic MOBA Heroes of Newerth is sparking comeback rumors. While unconfirmed, recent developer activity on social media hints at a possible revival. After a three-year silence, the official Heroes of Newerth social media channels have sprung back to life, generating significant fan speculation.
The rise of MOBAs, spurred by the success of Dota, saw numerous clones emerge. League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth were prominent examples in the late 2000s and early 2010s. However, Heroes of Newerth ultimately couldn't maintain its competitive edge, leading to its closure. Recent events, however, suggest a potential return.
Personally, my MOBA playstyle leans towards bruiser roles in the top or off-lane. Aatrox and Mordekaiser in League of Legends, and Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter in Dota 2 are favorites. If those roles are unavailable, I'm adaptable, though I prefer ranged carries over mid or support.
The initial clue came via a social media post – the first in over three years. The previous post, in December 2021, announced the game's closure. The recent January 1st post, a simple "Happy NEW Year" (with "NEW" capitalized), immediately ignited fan discussions. Further fueling speculation, subtle updates to the Heroes of Newerth website now display a silhouetted logo with surrounding particles. This wasn't a solitary event. The January 6th post, an image of a large cracking egg, intensified the excitement. Fan theories abound, ranging from HoN hero integration into Dota 2 to the development of a mobile version.
The renewed social media engagement clearly demonstrates continued player interest in Heroes of Newerth. The developer's intentions remain uncertain, but if the speculation proves true, it will be fascinating to see how Heroes of Newerth fares against today's leading MOBAs.
