Netflix Achieves Record Subscriber Growth, Announces Price Increases
Netflix reported record-breaking subscriber growth in Q4 2024, surpassing 300 million paid subscribers for the first time. The company added a staggering 19 million subscribers in the final quarter, bringing the full-year total to a record 41 million. While this marks the last quarter for which Netflix will report subscriber growth figures (though key milestones will still be announced), the achievement is accompanied by another price increase.
This marks yet another price adjustment for Netflix, following increases in 2023 and 2022. The company justifies the price hikes, stating in its shareholder letter that increased investment in programming necessitates occasional price adjustments to fund further improvements and enhance member value. The price increases are effective immediately in the US, Canada, Portugal, and Argentina, and were already factored into the 2025 financial guidance.
While the exact price increases weren't explicitly detailed in the shareholder letter, reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg suggest the following changes:
A significant addition is a new "extra member with ads" plan. This allows users of the ad-supported plan to add an extra member outside their household for an additional fee, a feature previously restricted to standard and premium plans.
Netflix's Q4 revenue saw a 16% year-over-year increase, reaching $10.2 billion. Annual revenue also grew by 16%, totaling $39 billion. The company projects a 12% to 14% year-over-year revenue growth in 2025.
