In an insightful interview with Xbox Wire, Fumihiko Yasuda, Head of Team NINJA at Koei Tecmo, explained the vision behind NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black. Yasuda highlighted that the original NINJA GAIDEN 2 stands as one of the most robust action games in the series, and the addition of "Black" to the title signifies it as the ultimate edition, echoing the impact of NINJA GAIDEN Black on the first game.

The inception of NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black was fueled by fan feedback gathered during the launch of NINJA GAIDEN Master Collection in 2021. Fans expressed a desire to revisit the essence of NINJA GAIDEN 2. Yasuda noted that the development of NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black was a direct response to the concerns of core fans about the future of Ryu Hayabusa, particularly with the introduction of a new protagonist in NINJA GAIDEN 4. Four years later, in 2013, Team Ninja introduced NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 Plus for the PS Vita, which restored the gore elements of the original while introducing new features like Hero mode, Ninja race, and Turbo. The latest in the series before NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black was the NINJA GAIDEN Master Collection, launched in 2021 across multiple platforms including PS4, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
