Bethesda has officially announced that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not include official mod support. However, this hasn't deterred the passionate community of fans, who have already begun releasing a series of unofficial mods.

Just hours after Bethesda and Virtuos surprise-released Oblivion Remastered for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, several community mods surfaced on the popular modding site, Nexus Mods. While these initial mods are primarily small-scale customizations, they underscore the unwavering dedication of The Elder Scrolls modding community.

At the time of writing, an impressive 22 mods are already available on the site. The first mod to be released offers PC players the ability to customize their desktop by swapping the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut icon with one of two images featuring the game's notorious Adoring Fan. Other mods enable players to bypass the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens. Additionally, mods that adjust gameplay elements, such as one that modifies the Wizard’s Fury spell and another that removes the in-game compass, are also available.

This early wave of mods comes despite Bethesda's usual encouragement of modding in their games. The company confirmed the absence of official mod support for Oblivion Remastered in an FAQ section on their website.

One modder, GodschildGaming, uploaded an Iron Longsword damage mod to Nexus Mods to demonstrate that modding is still feasible. In the mod's description, they stated, "This is just to prove modding is possible. Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept."

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was released today, marking 19 years since the original game's debut. As more players dive into the remastered version on PC and consoles, the modding community is expected to grow, offering increasingly diverse and creative ways to personalize the gaming experience. While we anticipate more mods to emerge, you can explore discussions on why some players consider this release more of a remake than a remaster, and the reasoning behind Bethesda's choice of the "Remastered" label.
