The scarcity stems partly from the release of the PS5 Pro, which notably lacks a disc drive option. This, combined with the earlier release of the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, has created significant demand for the separately sold PS5 disc drive attachment, particularly in the US, where supply has been consistently low for months.

While some retailers have managed to restock in early 2025, availability remains patchy. As of January 15th, Amazon US and PlayStation Direct are selling the drive for its MSRP of $79.99. However, a third-party Walmart seller is offering it at a 50% markup ($122) with limited stock.

With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still showing the drive as out of stock, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
