Nintendo is prepared to combat potential Nintendo Switch 2 launch shortages and thwart scalpers, stating, "We are making preparations." This follows the release of their latest financial report, where President Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about a repeat of the original Switch's 2017 launch shortages.
Furukawa, speaking to Nikkei and translated by VGC, emphasized that Nintendo will implement comprehensive strategies based on past experiences with scalping. He confirmed, "We will take all possible measures... We are making preparations."
These preparations likely involve significantly increasing Nintendo Switch 2 production. Last year, Nintendo highlighted sufficient manufacturing to meet demand as crucial for combating scalpers. The original Switch's limited supply in March 2017 fueled scalping activities. However, Furukawa assured that the Switch 2 launch will be different.
He reiterated a previous statement from July 2024: "As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand... Although we were unable to produce sufficient quantities of Nintendo Switch hardware last year and the year before due to a shortage of semiconductor components, this situation has now been resolved."
A Switch 2 Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, promising further details. Global hands-on events are also planned.
Addressing declining Nintendo Switch sales, Furukawa dismissed the notion that consumers are delaying purchases in anticipation of the Switch 2, stating, "We don't think the impact of refraining from purchasing is that great." He acknowledged that while sales are strong for an eighth year, they haven't met targets.
Nintendo plans to continue supporting the original Switch post-Switch 2 launch, contingent on consumer demand. Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are slated for 2025 Switch releases.
