Scalebound, a once highly anticipated Xbox One exclusive, captivated gamers with its promise of dynamic combat, evocative music, and a unique bond with a colossal dragon companion. This ambitious action project, unveiled in 2014, ultimately fell victim to cancellation in 2017, leaving a void in the hearts of many.
Recently, a video surfaced on Clover Inc.'s official X account, showcasing Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived Scalebound gameplay footage. The video captured Kamiya's nostalgic reflections on the game's development, highlighting his continued pride in the project despite its unfortunate fate. He further fueled speculation with a retweet, simply stating, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!", a pointed message directed at Phil Spencer, head of Xbox.
This isn't a new sentiment from Kamiya; he previously expressed his desire to revisit Scalebound in early 2022, suggesting a renewed conversation with Microsoft regarding its potential revival.
While whispers of a Scalebound return have circulated consistently, rumors intensified in early 2023. Although several sources hinted at a possible reboot, Microsoft remained officially silent. Phil Spencer himself, when questioned about Scalebound by Game Watch, offered only a cryptic smile and the statement, "I have nothing to add at this time."
Even with renewed interest from Microsoft, a swift return of Scalebound is unlikely. Hideki Kamiya and Clover Inc. are currently engrossed in developing a new Okami installment. Therefore, any potential Scalebound revival would depend on the completion of their current projects before development could commence. However, the persistent conversation surrounding Scalebound, years after its cancellation, offers a glimmer of hope that players might one day experience this long-awaited title.
