HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 is expanding its cast with six new additions as it gears up for its premiere on April 13. Variety has shared insights into how the live-action series will further delve into the source material from the acclaimed video game series.
The new actors joining the show are Joe Pantoliano, known for roles in Memento and The Matrix; Alanna Ubach, who has appeared in Euphoria and Bombshell; Ben Ahlers from The Gilded Age and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina; Hettienne Park of Don’t Look Up; Robert John Burke, seen in RoboCop 3; and Noah Lamanna from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
These additions will bring to life characters from The Last of Us Part II as well as introduce new faces to the series. Joe Pantoliano will portray Eugene, a character previously known only briefly in the game as Ellie and Dina’s friend. In Season 2, Eugene's role will be significantly expanded, offering viewers a deeper look into his background and his relationship with Joel and Ellie.
Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann spoke to Variety about their approach to fleshing out characters similar to how they treated Bill in Season 1. Druckmann expressed excitement about the opportunity to enrich Eugene's story, noting that the game's portrayal was somewhat superficial and that the series aims to explore the heart of Joel and Ellie's relationship through this character.
Robert John Burke will play Seth, the bar owner from The Last of Us Part II, known for his bigotry and sandwich-giving, while Noah Lamanna will portray Kat, Ellie's former girlfriend. Alanna Ubach, Ben Ahlers, and Hettienne Park will take on the roles of new characters named Hanrahan, Burton, and Elise Park, respectively.
This new ensemble joins the returning cast including Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Isabela Merced as Dina, Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, and Gabriel Luna as Tommy. The showrunners have hinted that the narrative from The Last of Us Part II will unfold over multiple seasons, promising more surprises as the episodes are released.
For fans eager to learn more, The Last of Us Season 2 is set to premiere on April 13. You can also explore why the series is planned to span four seasons and hear from Neil Druckmann about the inclusion of some "pretty brutal" cut content from the original video game sequel.
