Lenovo's Legion Go S: The First Third-Party SteamOS Handheld
Lenovo has unveiled the Legion Go S, a significant handheld gaming PC marking the first third-party device to ship with Valve's SteamOS. Previously exclusive to the Steam Deck, this expansion broadens SteamOS availability to other manufacturers.
The Legion Go S, launching in May 2025 for $499, offers a compelling alternative to Windows-based handhelds. Unlike competitors like the Asus ROG Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+, which utilize Windows, the Legion Go S leverages SteamOS's optimized Linux-based system for a smoother, console-like experience. This has been a key advantage for the Steam Deck, and Valve has been actively working towards this third-party expansion for some time.
Initially leaked, the Legion Go S's SteamOS variant was confirmed at CES 2025. Lenovo also announced the Legion Go 2, a successor to the original Legion Go, but only the Legion Go S will initially offer the SteamOS option. The Legion Go S boasts a lighter, more compact design than its predecessor while maintaining comparable performance.

The $499 SteamOS version guarantees full feature parity with the Steam Deck, including identical software updates (excluding hardware-specific adjustments). A Windows 11 version will also be available, offering more storage options at a higher price point. While currently exclusive to Lenovo, Valve's blog post indicates a public SteamOS beta for other handhelds is forthcoming. The success of the SteamOS Legion Go S may influence future SteamOS partnerships with other manufacturers.
