What is a Stronghold in Minecraft?

Ender PortalImage: youtube.com

A stronghold is an underground catacomb, a relic from ancient times. As you navigate its winding corridors, you'll discover valuable items, prison cells, libraries, and other intriguing areas. Most importantly, it houses the portal to The End, the game's final frontier where you'll confront the Ender Dragon.

To activate the portal, you'll need the Eye of Ender, which we'll explore in detail next. Remember, finding a stronghold without this item is nearly impossible; the game's design limits your search methods to ensure an element of mystery and challenge.

Eye of Ender

The Eye of Ender is the official and intended method for locating strongholds. Craft it using:

  • Blaze Powder, obtained by crafting blaze rods dropped by Blazes.
  • Ender Pearls, primarily obtained by defeating Endermen, though they can also be traded from priest villagers for emeralds or found in stronghold chests.

Once crafted, hold the Eye of Ender and use it. It will soar into the air for three seconds, pointing towards the nearest stronghold. Be mindful, as the Eye is consumable and may either return to you or vanish. Use it strategically!

You'll need multiple Eyes to activate the portal to The End, so gather ample resources before embarking on your quest. In survival mode, around 30 Eyes might be necessary to ensure you can challenge the dragon.

The Locate Command

For a less conventional approach, enable cheat commands in your game settings and use the following command:

/locate structure stronghold

This works if your game version is 1.20 or higher. Once you have the coordinates, teleport using:

/tp

Remember, these coordinates are approximate, so you may need to search further to find the stronghold.

Stronghold Rooms

Library

The library, constructed from stone blocks, bricks, and bookshelves, is a spacious room with high ceilings and cobwebs that add to its mysterious ambiance. Hidden deep within the stronghold, it may contain multiple instances. Chests near the bookshelves often hold enchanted books and other valuable resources, potentially aiding in your future adventures.

Prison

The prison resembles a confusing maze with narrow corridors, bars, and dim lighting, creating a grim atmosphere. Watch out for skeletons, zombies, and creepers lurking in the shadows. The danger stems not from the prisoners but from these hostile mobs.

Fountain

The fountain room's centerpiece gives it a magical feel, as if ancient magic echoes through the stronghold's walls. Light filtering through stone cracks dances on the water's surface, enhancing the room's mystical allure. It might have once been a site for rituals or a place of solitude.

Secret Rooms

Hidden behind the stronghold's walls, secret rooms are treasure troves filled with chests containing valuable resources, enchanted books, and rare equipment. Be cautious of traps, such as hidden mechanisms that trigger arrows. Always keep an eye on your health, as any misstep could be fatal.

Altar

At first glance, the altar room may seem more like a grim prison than a sacred space. Its stone walls bear the marks of time, and the central stone resembles a cell rather than an altar. Only once your eyes adjust to the dim light will you recognize it as an ancient altar.

Stronghold Mobs

The stronghold is guarded by relatively weak enemies like skeletons, creepers, and Silverfish, manageable even with basic iron armor. Yet, within its walls, you'll encounter formidable foes, making every exploration a thrilling challenge.

Rewards

The rewards found in strongholds are random, so luck plays a significant role. Some of the valuable items you might stumble upon include:

  • Enchanted book
  • Iron chestplate
  • Iron sword
  • Iron horse armor
  • Gold horse armor
  • Diamond horse armor

Portal to the Ender Dragon

Every game has its beginning and end, and Minecraft is no exception. After collecting all the gear and exploring the world, the stronghold awaits as the gateway to the final boss, the Ender Dragon. It's not just a path to the game's conclusion but also a place for exploration and combat against formidable monsters. It would be a shame to miss out on fully exploring the stronghold and encountering its inhabitants.
